You're invited to ATypI's sixty-fourth annual conference!
Join the international typographic community October 27–31, 2020, when ATypI will celebrate more than sixty years of typographic education, heritage, technology, business, and camaraderie.
ATypI 2020 All Over is the first virtual conference presented by the Association Typographique Internationale. Due to the global pandemic we have all been facing, and out of an abundance of caution and concern for the health and safety of our typographic family, we made the decision to postpone our Paris conference until it's safe for everyone to travel and attend large events. Even though we can't be together in person this year, we're looking forward to bringing our community together in a new and exciting way.
ATypI 2020 will bring together typeface designers, publishers, developers, educators, and other members of the global type, tech, and design communities. ATypI is an international network that spans design professions, company sizes, and geographic areas of activity. We're going to take full advantage of the opportunity to offer exceptional programming, networking, and social events, and to hear from top experts and a huge number of new voices from around the world. We couldn't be more excited-a virtual conference will allow us to be more inclusive and accessible than ever before.
ATypI conferences are known for taking place in stimulating environments where participants will meet like-minded professionals and students, make connections across industries, and develop extensive networks of learning, enterprise, and mentorship. This year's big event is no exception! We're creating a new kind of gathering that bridges cultures, generations, and time zones at the intersection of business and friendship.
It is in this spirit of comprehension, optimism, and inclusion that we invite designers, typographers, type designers, and type enthusiasts worldwide to join us the last week of October for ATypI 2020 All Over.
The call for proposals for the ATypI 2020 All Over online conference is now open.
Deadline for submissions has been extended to July 15, 2020.

Presenting your session
We call for presentations that are informative, engaging, and inspiring; we actively seek topics that will provoke debate and contribute to the ATypI spirit of collegial dialogue and exchange. We expect scholarly subjects to be communicated with enthusiasm, and the most entertaining presentation to have a solid intellectual underpinning. We are not looking for academic papers to be read aloud-we seek talks that are visually rich and compelling, fascinating, and thought-provoking. We expect speakers to prepare their presentations with care for the assigned length, and to adhere strictly to our published schedule.
Along with welcoming seasoned presenters, we are committed to showcasing new voices-newcomers are encouraged to submit proposals. We are especially interested in hearing from those from underrepresented communities, and will strive to build a program that is as diverse, equitable, inclusive, and balanced as possible. If you have not previously presented at ATypI, the final program team would be happy to review videos of past presentations, panel discussions, workshops, interviews, etc., where you are a participant. Please note that providing video IS NOT MANDATORY-only submit if you feel that it is essential to supporting your proposal.
Audience
Conference attendees represent the global community of type and typography professionals, students, and enthusiasts from all levels of experience and a variety of fields. We welcome type designers, graphic designers, UX designers, project managers and software engineers, web designers, information designers, researchers, historians, educators, writers, publishers, lettering artists, calligraphers, students, and interested others from around the world.
Language
The official conference language is English. Presentations, workshops, and other sessions are typically delivered in English, but we will also offer programming in other languages! Just let us know in the submission form which language(s) you would prefer to present in.
Proposals
Each submission must contain a title, a brief description of the proposed presentation (max. 300 words), several keywords, speaker's name (or list of panelists, including an experienced, vetted moderator), and a speaker's biography (max. 100 words). As mentioned above, if you haven't presented previously at an ATypI conference, you are welcome to include links to videos of presentations you may have made, or other relevant materials that document your presenting skills and/or expertise in the subject matter of your proposal. Please specify the type and duration of your proposed session.
TYPES OF SESSIONS
WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS
These activities are typically designed for a subset of conference attendees, with different workshops offered concurrently. Some sessions are aimed at typography/design students, while others are designed for practitioners from basic to intermediate levels and beyond. Multiple workshop lengths will be considered this year. Workshops should be interactive to the extent possible within a virtual setting.
GENERAL SESSION
ATypI's mainstage programming will run over multiple days and cover as many time zones as possible. The default time for presentations is 20 minutes or less. The program committee may grant longer time slots on a case-by-case basis, but short and sweet is preferable during a virtual event. Presentations may be on a specific topic on type, typography, and the related arts and sciences. Programming is aimed at design practitioners, educators, developers, and researchers, etc., as well as students, recent graduates, and young professionals.
OTHER PROGRAMMING TYPES
ATypI 2020 will offer plenty of opportunities for networking, engagement, entertainment, and doing business with sponsors, partners, and collaborators. There will be everything from exhibitions and film screenings to breakouts and brain breaks-lots of room for learning, sharing, working, and fun.
Program committee and reviews
All proposals will be read by the ATypI 2020 Program Committee and Final Review Team, which is comprised of select representatives from the ATypI board and staff, and a diverse group of experts from a variety of typographic and design disciplines. Each proposal will be read by at least four people with expertise and/or interest in a given topic. To assist potential ATypI speakers in shaping their presentations, The ATypI Program Committee may suggest amendments to proposals or requested time slots.
Financial information for participants
As a 501(c)(3) volunteer-driven nonprofit organization with a core educational mission, we strive to keep conference admission fees as low as possible so that we may be inclusive of all who wish to participate. Speakers and workshop leaders will be given complimentary access to the virtual conference and other perks to be announced. Unless otherwise noted, all participation expenses are the responsibility of each individual.
The call for submissions is now open. Submission deadline is now Jul 15, 2020.
